Excision of Benign Lesions

Excision of Benign Lesions Such As Moles or Cysts

Excision is often the best way to ensure complete removal of the lesion but it does leave a scar and the wound will be stitched up.

How Long Will I Be In Hospital?

All benign skin lesion removal procedures are carried out as day cases, so there is no need for a stay overnight in hospital.

Treatment will depend on the size of the lesion, how deep it is and where it is on your body. Benign skin lesion removal takes place under local anaesthetic.

Cryotherapy for Pre-Cancerous Lesions Such As Actinic Keratosis

Following this the area scabs and heals usually without a scar. It is not always successful if the lesion extends deeper into the skin than expected.

Biopsy of Suspicious Lesions to Exclude Skin Cancer

This is where a small sample is taken from a lesion and sent for histological examination to confirm if it's cancer, pre-cancerous or benign.

Procedure

Biopsy of Suspicious Lesions

Skin biopsies are done using a local anesthetic (numbing medicine), which is injected into the area with a very small needle.

You will probably feel a small prick and a little stinging as the medicine is injected, but you should not feel any pain during the biopsy.

It is the most common way to treat skin cancers and for the vast majority of skin cancers is all the treatment that is required. It will leave a scar and there is always a risk that more might need to be taken away.

Skin Graft Reconstruction

Skin Graft Reconstruction With Split or Full Thickness Skin Grafts

Skin grafts are used where the skin is too tight to stitch up after a lesion is removed.

There is a variety of ways a skin graft can be done and choice depends on where the wound is and how big it is.

Flap Reconstruction

used where the skin is too tight to stitch up

Flap reconstructions are used where the skin is too tight to stitch up after a lesion is removed.

Usually an area of skin close to the wound is rotated or advanced to close the wound.  They have some advantages over skin grafts as they often heal faster and provide better cosmetic results.
